Death Count In South Africa Tanker Blast Jumps To 27

JOHANNESBURG: The death toll from a gas tanker explosion in Johannesburg. On Christmas Eve has risen to 27, the provincial health department said on Thursday.

The blast in the city’s Boksburg suburb on Saturday tore off the roof of the Tambo Memorial Hospital’s emergency department. Destroying two houses, several cars and injured pedestrians up to 500 meters from the scene.

“The Department of Health has confirmed. That the Boksburg explosion has now killed 27 people. 10 of them are health workers at Tambo Memorial Hospital. The Gauteng Department of Health said in a statement.

Authorities had earlier said 18 people had died. But the number is expected to rise due to the serious nature of burns in the blast Tanker.

The truck driver, who was earlier arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide. Was released on Wednesday. Due to lack of evidence, local media reported.

President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged help to those affected by the explosion. And said authorities were looking into the incident.
